Saidie May

We invite you to learn about this fascinating aspect of the art world that has just been brought to light through the research of Saidie May's great-great neice, Susan Helen Adler. Ms. Adler has spent the last 12 years combing through hundreds of personal letters and materials pertaining to Mrs. May's life and collecting career, spanning the early half of the 20th century. Mrs. May's life was anything but typical for a well-bred, first generation American female at the turn of the 20th century.

Both Mrs. May and her sister, Blanche Adler traveled extensively. They were cousins of the Cone sisters from Baltimore, who amassed one of the largest collections of the work of Pierre Matisse. Mrs. May and Ms. Adler sent postcards from their travels to their neices in Germany before World War II. Ms. Adler uses many of these beautiful images in the book, as well as reproductions of artist's work which Mrs. May collected to illustrate the fascinating story of Mr.s May's life and legacy to the art community.
